Special drive held to check misuse of government houses

In a special drive which was recently carried out by the office of the House Allotment Committee and the Engineering Department to check the misuse of government houses, 10 cases comprising sub-letting and utilization of government houses for commercial purposes has come to the fore.
According to the officials, inspection teams comprising officials of the House Allotment Committee and the Engineering Wing of the Chandigarh Administration which have been constituted to conduct regular checking of the allotted government houses, reported violations conducted by the terms and condition of allotments in Sector 20, 23, 27, 28 and 29.
During the course of checking, six cases of sub-letting of government accommodation and four cases of misuse of accommodation for commercial purpose have been reported. The department is in the process of issuing Show Cause Notices for cancellation and penal rents to the defaulters.
Interestingly, the drive was conducted only on the houses allotted to the lower rung staff.
The government employee held guilty of sub-letting is to be charged penal rent at the rate of fifty times the normal license fee and employee shall be liable for the disciplinary action under the relevant Conduct Rules.
Furthermore, the Rules provide that such government employee concerned shall not be entitled for another allotment of government residence during his entire service period.
Any complaint regarding sub-letting and misuse of the government accommodation could be forwarded to the office of the Executive Engineer, Capital Project Division No.3, Sector 16, Chandigarh or Superintendent, House Allotment Committee, 2nd floor Estate Office Building, Sector 17, Chandigarh.
Such drives would be regularly carried out in the future as well.
