State rules out independent probe

Citing Madhav Chitale committee's appointment to look into alleged irrigation scam in state, the state government Wednesday submitted before the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court (HC) that there was no need for any independent probe.

HC had, a few days ago, asked the government to file its response to two PILs by citizens Mohan Karemore and others and local NGO Jan Manch led by advocate Anil Killor. The petitioners have demanded a CBI probe or a probe by retired Supreme Court judge in the scam.

The government said a departmental probe was on against 14 Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation (VIDC) officials for alleged sub-standard work in projects in the region.

Earlier, it said it had set up a Special Investigative Team (SIT) and no other probe was necessary. The court asked the government to submit the SIT's composition and terms of reference.
