When a bunch of amateur golfers gathered for an early tee-off on a slightly cold Monday morning at the Delhi Golf Club, it was not too tough to imagine that they perhaps had little in common amongst each other. There were some formal handshakes, some attempts at recollecting old faces and even more at trying to put a name to those faces. But the most important thing that mattered was well in place — their pride and love for their alma mater, St. Stephen's College.
Each year golf-loving Stephen's alumni gather at Delhi's oldest club to celebrate their college's values and traditions and this year their gait had renewed enthusiasm as they took pride in taking this event into its fourth decade.
Though the 30th edition of the annual Stephanian Golf Get Together brought together alumnae who had graduated from the college spanning over several decades, it did not take too long to rekindle the bonhomie and the sportsmanship that they once shared in college.
With each passing year, some new faces get added to the Stephanian family here and they are all welcomed with open arms and warm hospitality at the evening dinner. Anecdotes from their college days and old memories flow fast and thick and the Stephanian fraternity that is enriched by the leadership and success of its members in every walk of life celebrates each other's achievements.
The evening's mood is lightened by pulling each other's leg over their waning golf skills. The pain of missed putts is collectively lamented and those winning prizes are given an enthusiastic cheer.
Even the prize winners, who beamed proudly while walking around with their hampers , took a walk down memory lane as old days of winning accolades for their colleges and making similar speeches flood their minds.
