Student commits suicide by jumping from high-rise building

A 19-year-old engineering student allegedly committed suicide by jumping from a high-rise building in Thakur village in suburban Kandivali late on Sunday night, probably due to severe academic pressure, the police said.

According to the Samta Nagar police, the deceased has been identified as Pratik Ramesh Kamat (19), who jumped off the 24th floor of Challenger Tower in the Thakur village area around 10.30 pm yesterday.

He lived in Aangan building in the same area and had gone to Challenger Tower to visit a friend.

A first year student pursuing an engineering degree in telecommunication from the Thakur College Of Engineering and Technology, Pratik failed in five subjects and was to appear for re-examination.

Before taking the extreme step, Pratik had sent a detailed SMS in English to his mother who is a housewife, stating that he did not know how he failed despite trying hard to clear his exams.

The police said no foul play has been suspected.
