An 18-year-old student of Amity University drowned under mysterious circumstances in the university's swimming pool early on Thursday morning.
Instead of the administration, it was the hospital which informed them of the incident, the police said.
The boy, Justin John Xavier, a first year BTech student, was studying at the Amity University campus at Sector 125. He drowned while he went swimming with two of his friends around 7.30 am.
"There were four life guards and around ten other students who were also swimming when Xavier drowned," said V P Sandlas, director general, Amity Institute for Space Science and Technology.
According to friends of Xavier, he was not feeling well for the last two days, but the administration was not informed about his health.
His father John Xavier works in Saudi Arabia with a private firm and his mother is a government employee in Kerala. The family has been informed about the accident.
The police are struggling to find a reason for the death.
"The administration told us that the depth of swimming pool is 4 to 5 feet and Xavier was over 5 feet tall. He knew how to swim," said a senior police officer. "Moreover, though there were students and lifeguards present on the scene when he drowned, it is surprising that no one realised he was drowning."
The supervisor for the residential accommodation in Amity rushed the student to the Kailash Hospital in Noida, said a police officer.
"He was declared dead on arrival," said Anil Samania, the Station House Officer, Sector 39. "The hospital informed us."
The police are investigating the matter. The wait is on for the family to come and claim the body.
