Hundred glorious years of Indian cinema were on display at the 64th Republic Day function today with a unique tableau presenting the rich cinematic heritage of the country through legends of past and present.
The 'Cinema Mayur Pankhi' tableau, by Information and Broadcasting Ministry, was shaped as a mythological bird-boat and paid tribute to landmark movies, legendary directors, musicians, singers and actors, including names like Guru Dutt, Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan.
The float had film reels woven around it and was accompanied by artistes dressed up like Raja Harishchandra, Fearless Nadia of 'Hunterwali' fame, Akbar from 'Mughal-e-Azam' and Bhuvan from 'Lagaan' among others.
Actor Irrfan Khan's voiceover recalled the 100 year journey of Indian cinema and its various achievement as the float drove past the cheering crowd.
"As we are celebrating the centenary year of Indian cinema, the I&B Ministry took this initiate to showcase the cinematic heritage of 100 years on the occasion of the Republic Day," I&B Secretary Uday Kumar Varma told PTI.
"We had plans of bringing the stars themselves here but due to security reason things could not materialise in time. We had conceived the idea of the tableau last June only," he added.
The float painted in silver (to represent the silver screen) had names of landmark movies, embossed on both its sides and also bore images of legendary singers.
