Tata Motors terminated over 3000 temp workers over slowdown

The services of an estimated 75 per cent of total 5,000 temporary workers of auto giant Tata Motors here have been terminated in view of the prevailing slowdown, a Telco Workers Union (TWU) official said.

The General Secretary of TWU Chandrabhan Singh said the termination of services of temporary workers was only a routine process depending on the production.

Stating that around 75 per cent of the temporary workers were issued notices in this regard, he said their services were terminated only from those departments which have already achieved the target.

When contacted, Tata Motors Corporate Communication chief Debasis Ray in Mumbai said we engage workers as per the demand and disengage them when the work is completed. "There is nothing unusual in this," he added.

Singh assured that the temporary workers would be called back as per the company's requirement when the market situation would improve.

Compared to general production of 10,000 units per month, he said the company could churn out only 3500 units this month due to the slump in demand.
