Offering Indian, Chinese and Italian vegetarian food, there can be no lack of choice at this restaurant.
Pune certainly doesn't suffer from a dearth of vegetarian restaurants, thanks to the Udupi restaurants, salad bars and Jain eateries spotting the city. Green Fields, a new vegetarian eatery in Kalyani Nagar, however, comes as a breath of fresh air simply because it sticks to the basics.
Located near Bishops School, above the restaurant Polka Dots, it is one of the few vegetarian restaurants in the area offering staple north and south Indian, Chinese and Italian food. The dining area is split into two spaces. Decorated in pale colours and soft lighting, the place has a comforting feel to it. Content, we chose a corner seat and gave the menu a cursory glance. Soon we realised that it would take us longer to pick from the many dishes, than to actually eat them. With some help from our servers, we decided on Cheese Pakoda and Bruschetta (slices of toasted bread with fresh tomato and basil). The pakodas were juicy and crunchy at the same time, while the Bruschetta was fresh.
For the main course, we start with Primavera, pasta cooked in white cream sauce, with paprika, olives, capers and parsley. The sauce was a runny, but there was no compromise on taste. We tried paneer korma, tawa bhindi and Hyderabadi biryani and found all dishes to be a tad spicy. We were smitten by the tawa bhindi, which was crunchy and spicy. Dessert was Sizzling Chocolate Brownie, served with fresh ice-cream and chocolate sauce on a sizzling pan, a good end to our meal.
Green Fields gets most of the things right — predictable tastes, conservative menu and a family ambience. The only problem is that of plenty, which can leave the diner looking at the menu for an easy 15 minutes before deciding. But we can live with that.
