Bollywood music composer Daniel B George's satirical carol, What Man Santa, goes viral on YouTube
Jingle bells is passé, at least for the moment, because Peter does not like it. Flummoxed? Christmas has a new carol called, What man Santa, Why don't you come Peter home, and this one doesn't seem to be very fond of the fat,old man. The latest song that has put YouTube in a tizzy has a dark, satirical streak and is the brainchild of music composer Daniel B George, Srikant A and Uday Rao. The video has been shot by writer-lyricist Swanand Kirkire.
"The song is about Peter's complaint to Santa for not visiting his house ever. It is, in a way, a reality of life for people who keep praying and waiting for him," says Kirkire, who had heard a shorter version of the song a while ago. He asked the trio to work on it again and release it around Christmas this year. Kirkire shot the video with Neeraj Kotkar and Vineet Sapru in a day, with a budget of Rs 1 lakh. By Monday, the video had garnered more than 4.5 lakh hits on YouTube.
It is during this festive season that most look for magic and miracle to enter their lives. "Which is why the song," says George. He refers to the class divide between the rich and the poor that forms the basis of the song. "It is about the poor marginalised Peters, and it is their grouse that Santa doesn't find his way into their reality. The song is in a light vein, of course," says George, who has given music to movies such as Johnny Gaddar, Agent Vinod and Well Done Abba. "Peter is expressing his disappointment over this touch of magic and hope never knocking on his door," says George, who made sure that the song has fun written all over it.
