The origins

Born in 1943 to a daily wage earner at Daryaganj in Delhi, Tunda studied till class VII in Christian Missionary School at Pilkhuwa on Delhi's outskirts, dropping out after his father died. In 1954-55, he shifted to his uncle's home in Meerut hoping to study but has told the police his uncle made him work on making wooden carts and wheels. When his mother got to know of this, she made him return to Pilkhuwa, where he started working in moulding units for daily wages. Tunda assaulted in Patiala House Court complex

Later, Tunda took up odd jobs as a waiter in Agra and as a carpenter in Ittarsi, MP. He has three wives — Zarina, 70, Mumtaz, 42, and Asma, 30 — and seven children. In 1983-84, he entered the clothes trade but lost heavily and migrated to Ahmedabad, where he started working as a scrap dealer. It was there that he married Mumtaz. Tunda's fascination with explosives began at the age of 12

He has been described with many names and allegedly had many passports. In Pakistan, he was "Amir" and preached at madarsas on the outskirts of Karachi, where he has a shop. The report cites an account in the name of Abdul Quddus at Allied Bank and Meezan Bank, Karachi; this is the name on a passport allegedly seized from him.
