These youngsters are out to change dogs’ life

Provide strays a home, adoption camp in Bandra today

When young animal rights activists Ruchi Nadkarni and Taronish Bulsara organised an adoption camp in Bandra last year, they did not expect more than 200-300 people to turn up. The participation was about four times the estimate. This year, they hope the number goes up substantially.

Ruchi, a theatre actress, and Taronish started World for All Animal Care and Adoptions three-and-a-half years ago when they were college students. The two now work full time for the NGO with a team of about 200 volunteers.

This year's camp will be held on Sunday at Bandra Hindu Association Hall.

The youngsters have been working with animal rights NGOs from their college days. However, Ruchi said, "We observed that the organisations focused on rescuing strays and vaccinating them. There was no effort to provide the animals a home . Infant strays have a very low survival rate and providing them a better environment is important. So, we came up with this concept."

The NGO takes care of rescued strays. Its volunteers clean them, rid them of pests and ticks and take them to a vet. The animals are then provided temporary foster homes.

About a hundred stray dogs and cats will be put up for adoption on Sunday. Pet trainers, vets and counselors will guide people who want to adopt.

Taronish said, "Our objective is to create a common platform for animal lovers and ensure rescued animals find caring and responsible homes."

Even as the animal rescue work continues, Ruchi has begun a trek to Mount Everest base camp to raise money for the group.
