In a first, the lower age limit, which was 18 years earlier, has been scrapped
With Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi pushing for inclusiveness for the youth, the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) - Central Uttar Pradesh, will witness more changes being implemented ahead of its reconstitution in the coming weeks.
"In a first, the lower age limit, which was 18 years earlier, has been scrapped," said Iftkhar Ahmed, Election Commissioner from NSUI's national unit, who was in the state capital on Monday. "Similarly, earlier only those students enrolled in courses of two years or more could apply but now those enrolled in one-year courses can also become members," Ahmed said, highlighting other minor changes brought in by the NSUI national unit beginning this year.
In NSUI central zone, which comprises 21 districts, the last day of submission of membership forms is February 20. After that, elections will be held at college level and a five-member committee will be formed. At college-level too, a minimum of 25 members will now be required for electing a committee, down from 50 members earlier.
The college committees will then elect a five-member district committee and 21-member state committee as well as four national delegates. "The state committee will have one president, six vice-presidents, and seven each of general secretaries and secretaries," Ahmed said, adding that adequate representation of SC/STs and women will also be ensured in the district and state committees.
The incumbent central unit of NSUI, led by Rahul Sachan, however, will not be dissolved till the new committee is formed, Ahmed said. "We expect to complete the process and install a new committee by March 20," he said.
