Top cop aims at role of a graft crusader

Islam's political ambition can't be overlooked as he hobnobs with 'similar' Muslim groups

Controversial IPS officer Nazrul Islam is gearing up to launch "a socio-political platform" which, according to him, will fight corruption and discrimination of people based on caste, community, creed and religion.

The incumbent Additional Director General of Police ( Training) will name his outfit "Mul Niwasi Samity" ( Association of People from the Roots). "The organisation will work to ensure the rights given by the constitution to backward people irrespective of caste, creed and religion," Islam told The Indian Express.

According to sources, the framework of the organisation has been chalked out and will include a state committee, district committees, block-level and booth-level committees. Even though Nazrul and his followers strongly advocate that the outfit will focus on corruption and discrimination of people, its political ambitions can be hardly overlooked. Apart from the organisational set-up that is comparable to any political outfit with state, the members admit having set their eyes on the 2016 Assembly polls and say that they will put up their candidates in the elections.

If that is the long-term goal, the short-term objective is to consolidate similar groups and attempts are being made to forge bonds. For instance, Naya Zamana ó a similar socio-economic outfit formed by rebel CPM leader Abdur Rezzak Mollah is likely to join hands with Islam as would the Party for Democratic Socialism (PDS) of Saifullalah Chowdhury.

"Other Muslim groups, including Naya Zamana formed and the PDS, have already held talks with our outfit, and they have agreed to start working under one umbrella," said a close associate of Islam.

When contacted, Samir Patunda of the PDS said that he would always work with the IPS officer. "I know his work and have faith that whatever he would do, it will be good for the people."
