Tope family college violated UGC guidelines: MU panel

A three-member local inspection committee set up by Mumbai University (MU) to probe alleged irregularities at MSS (Matsyodari Shikshan Sanstha) College of Commerce, run by a trust controlled by the family of higher and technical education minister Rajesh Tope, has said the college violated UGC guidelines and did not have essential facilities.

The committee report submitted to MU noted the college did not have healthcare and canteen facilities for students and staff.

The college was operating from a residential-cum-commercial building called Silicon Tower at Vashi, in violation of UGC regulations, MU sources said.

The report will now be circulated among university authorities.

Sources said MSS gave an assurance to the fact-finding committtee that it will shift out of the residential complex where it runs BCom classe"This report is an eyewash. The university authorities are not coming on record as they are scared of the higher and technical education minister. There has already been a delay in probing the serious matter. Let us wait and watch what action is taken against the college," said Dilip Karande, MU senate and management council members. The committee had visited the college on November 21, 2012. Sources said the report said the college, which has 95 students, had basic facilities such as three classrooms, a library, computer lab, gymkhana and toilet.

Tope said, "The report has said the college offers all provisions as per guidelines for the number of students it caters to. The only thing is it doesn't have a separate building and we are in the process of providing that. We are in talks with MGM Dental College, which has agreed to give us a floor for the commerce college. We are discussing issues like rent."

College principal Rashmi Dargad said the process of shifting was on. She, however, refused to divulge details, saying the college management was looking into the issue. She said she had not received a copy of the university committee report.
