A mob vandalised more than a dozen trucks after a dump truck ran over a biker on the outskirts of Jamnagar city on Sunday. The police arrested 12 persons for rioting and seized 15 vehicles.
Police said that the accident took place as driver of the dump truck (GJ 10 X 8716), who was driving on the wrong site, ran over one Dilip Hirani near Ashapur Hotel on Khambhaliya, Lalpur Bypass at around 9.30 am.
Hirani (28) was killed on the spot and a flash mob gathered at the site. However, the truck driver managed to flee, police said.
"The mob started pelting stones at trucks. Windscreens of around 14 trucks were damaged by the mob," Chakubhai Gohil, police sub-inspector (PSI) of Panchkosi B Division police station, said.
The drama went on for a while as truck drivers ran for their safety by abandoning their vehicles while the angry mob vented their fury before police could control the rioters.
"We had to use some force to disperse the mob and restore normal traffic on the road," Gohil further said.
The police arrested 12 persons in the evening and seized 14 motorbikes and scooters and an auto-rickshaw from the crime scene.
"We have booked the mob for rioting and further investigation is on," the PSI said.
The Panskosi B Division police have also booked the unidentified truck driver for rash driving and causing death by negligence.
