Twenty more inmates flee juvenile home

Just hours after 15 juveniles fled a shelter home in Mukherjee Nagar on Tuesday, 20 more inmates escaped from the correctional facility. Officials in charge of the home said the juveniles held three welfare officers hostage before escaping.

On Tuesday afternoon, a clash broke out between two groups of juveniles inside the home, during which they set fire to more than 200 blankets and 80 mattresses. The juveniles also attacked each another with blades.

Officials said five juveniles who had escaped, fearing an attack by other boys, returned to the correctional home on Wednesday afternoon. They claimed that they were afraid of getting killed in the violence.

Police said officials in charge of the home told them that several boys, who had been sent to hospital with injuries inflicted by blades, attacked other inmates after returning.

The juvenile home has 114 inmates, with most sharing dormitories. Some are kept in separate rooms. Two months ago, several inmates had escaped after going on a rampage.
