The University of Pune has issued notices and guidelines to all its departments and hostels to step up security provided to female students on the campus. A special vehicle service has also been started for females till 11 pm within the university campus.

"After the Delhi gangrape incident, various meetings were held by university officials and committees were set up to increase the security for women students. The guidelines are a result of these meetings," said UoP officiating registrar Dilip D Dhavale.

"From 6 pm to 11 pm, a four-wheeler (Sumo) will ply exclusively for female students within an interval of half an hour. The vehicle will have a woman security guard along with a driver," added Dhavale. This comes at a time when many students were complaining that the there were not enough transportation facilities within the campus.

The vehicle will start from University main gate and cover all points, including women's hostel, main building, examination department bus stop, Jayakar Library, Paryavaran Chowk and Arogya Kendra bus stop.

Apart from this facility, the varsity has also adopted some additional measures. "Now, women are not allowed to leave university hostels after 10 pm. Their in-time for hostels is being strictly followed," said Dhavale.

"Without a written permission from the head of the department or the authority concerned, female students will not be allowed to indulge in research activities inside the campus." Immediately after the Delhi gangrape incident, the university had also appointed 13 women officers to guard over 900 girls staying in the hostels.
