After Chinese and Japanese, it is now the turn of US-based firm Gardner Denver to set up their first manufacturing unit in India at Changodar, an industrial cluster on the outskirts of Ahmedabad, which is fast turning into a hub for air compressors and pumps.
The 150-year-old company from the US has taken the 85,000 sq ft space on lease and is setting up an industrial unit that will manufacture air compressors and pumps. "The land has been leased out by a group of investors and the company has been provided with a built-to-suit unit that is tailor-made to suit the needs of the company," said an official associated with the project. The land has been leased out for a fixed monthly rental.
The formal inauguration of the project is expected to happen in the beginning of 2014. "The project will initially have a capacity to manufacture 10,000 compressors in a year. We are looking to tap the industrial demand in and around this region. We'll also be manufacturing pumps and blowers in this facility," said Sanjay Ch-oksi, plant manager of Gardner Denver at Changodar.
The company is looking to manufacture medical vacuum pumps that is used by large hospital chains. Thought the exact quantum of investment of the project is not known, this is the second multinational company to set up a base in Changodar in the recent past for manufacturing air compressors and pumps.
In the last week of November, Shanghai Hitachi, a joint-venture company between Chinese Highly Group and Japan's Hitachi AP chose Changodar to set up India's largest AC compressor plant. The facility, that has a capacity of manufacturing two million sets per annum, is set up over an area of 33,000 sqm with an investment of $72 million.
