Jawed Usmani, a 1978 batch IAS officer, is learnt to be UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's top choice for the post of Chief Secretary.
Usmani, who is on central deputation since 2004, has served in the Prime Minister's Office and has also been part of Chief Minister's Office in Mulayam Singh's regime twice in the past. While there is no official confirmation of the decision yet, sources in UP's appointments department said a letter of request has been sent to the Government of India to relieve Usmani from central deputation on the direction of the Chief Minister.
Talking to The Indian Express from Delhi, Usmani said: "Yes, I am expected to be in Lucknow by the end of this week." If appointed, Usmani will be the first Muslim to hold the top bureaucratic post in UP in a long time.
Usmani, 56, completed his MBA from IIM, Ahmedabad in 1976 and MSc in social policy and planning from London School of Economics in 1991. He served as Joint Secretary to Prime Ministers H D Deve Gowda, I K Gujral and A B Vajpayee from 1996 to 2001. From 2004 to 2007, he served as Joint Secretary to Manmohan Singh. Usmani had served as Special Secretary to Mulayam Singh Yadav from Chief Minister from December 1993 to June 1995.
