UT to set up 10 more e-Sampark centres

The e-Sampark centers run by the UT Administration have proved to be a hit, with an average of 1.6 lakh services being transacted in a month in 25 such centers in rural and urban areas. Buoyed by their success, the IT department of the Administration will offer more services, like processing the passports at these centres, and is also planning 10 more such centers in the city.

Director IT, Tanvi Garg, said that the government will shortly inaugurate a center at Sector 21 in Chandigarh and the other centers will come up in areas "where the services were not available as per the requirement."

"The areas will be mapped out and after assessing their feasibility the centers will be started. Areas where there are no centers in the vicinity of 5-km area will be preferred," she said. According to government officials new centers are being planned on priority in Sector 21, Sector 7, Sector 35, Sector 37 and Sector 45.

Garg said that the Administration will start the passport processing service shortly and that "discussions'' are on with other government departments on listing more services through these centers. Services of departments like health, engineering department, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh police, Chandigarh Housing Board are being offered through the e-sampark centers. Officials said that services of all other government departments which have not been covered would be added "only after the necessary infrastructure is put in place."

As of now, government officials said that the services that are popular and would be offered in other centers are payment of water and electricity bills, adding that the centers are also being used to file the complaints against government departments and right to information (RTI) applications. "Currently we are offering 22 services at e-Sampark centers and adding more centers will help us add the revenue," said a government official, who oversees the functioning of these centers.

The government has, in fact, seen the revenue go up from the existing centers. Revenue of Rs 1187 crore was raked in in the year 2011 from these centers against that of Rs 990 crore in the year 2010, officials said.

At the new centers both the government to citizen services (G2C) as well as the government to business (G2B) services will be made available to the people. "G2B services like the payment of bills of private cellular companies will also be provided at the new centers," said an official. He added that the Administration is planning more services and centers as during a recent review it was also found that such centers help raise awareness about different schemes and policies. "We have seen that the specialised desks at such centers are being used by people to get information about government schemes. These centers are effectively used as knowledge centers as well by people," officials said.
