Varsity’s diversity, showcased in Warli art

Symbolising strength and authority and a Warli painting that depicts diversity and tradition: this is the design of the main entrance gate to the Mumbai University's Kalina campus.

What is unique is that the two entry/exit gates at Kalina campus have been designed by students from JJ College of Architecture. The building and works committee of the university gave its nod to two designs last year. One, designed by Sachin Porkute and Zaid Nachan, was used for the main entrance; the second near the Hyatt side of the campus has been created by Zia Ansari.

The Warli motifs in white are set against a terra cotta background. Warli painting is a tribal art form from the Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh border. It depicts a story, of the lives of tribes with their own beliefs, customs and traditions.

"Our design is based on the concept of dissemination of education and tradition as symbolised by the university. The painting embodies the rich diversity of the university and its students. The returns have been high because our designs will now be part of the university forever," said Porkute, who graduated from JJ College of Architecture last year.

In 2010, students were asked to come up with designs which depicted "what the university stands for, its rich history of over 150 years, its presence and the future". While the project was open to all students of JJ College of Architecture, around 10 were initially shortlisted. After further scrutiny, three were submitted to the university, of which two were selected finally.
