Wall collapses in East Delhi, kills 5 children

Five children died and one was critically injured after an under-construction boundary wall of a vacant plot collapsed in Dallupura village near Ashok Vihar, East Delhi, on Wednesday.

The children, from the slum cluster adjacent to Dharamshila Hospital, were playing near the wall when it collapsed at 9.50 am.

Siblings Ankit (5) and Baby (3), Azad (5), Kanchan (5) and Amit (5) died in the accident. Saraswati (4), Azad's sister, is recuperating in the ICU of Dharamshila Hospital.

The 3,000-sqft empty plot was marked for a godown and the 17-foot-high wall was being constructed without proper foundation or support, police said.

"The wall was weak as it did not have a foundation. They were also trying to level the debris dumped against the wall with a JCB. The wall could not handle the pressure and collapsed," a senior police officer said.

Eyewitnesses told police that the contractor, Bhanwar Singh, was at site, but fled after the wall collapsed. The plot is owned by Vijender Gujjar and Sunil is the co-contractor.

All three are absconding since the incident and a case has been registered against them.

Eyewitness Suneeta told Newsline: "I could see the children playing and then the wall came down. They were trapped. People from other shacks ran to rescue the children."

Amit's father Sadan said: "I ran to clear the debris and pull out my children, but all I could see was their hands and legs." Parents of all other children were at work at the time.

Kanchan's sister Ritu (12) said: "My mother is a domestic help and had gone for work. She asked me to keep an eye on my sister. She was not letting me do the household chores, so I asked her to go and play outside. I wish I had not told her to go."

Police said a team of civil engineers has been asked to check the quality of material used for the wall. "A team from FSL has collected samples of the material. We have also sent teams to arrest the accused," police said.
