Week after UoP council decision, credit rating system hits roadblock

The University of Pune in the academic council meet held last week approved the credit rating system for all post graduate courses. Problems about its implementation has begun to emerge as no clear system for grading of external students have come up so far.

Every year lakhs of students take admission in the external category and they get a chance to appear directly for the final examinations.

"The engineering faculty already has the credit system for marking in place. From the next academic year, affiliated colleges too will have the credit rating system," V B Gaikwad, director, Board of College and University Development, UoP said. "A 5-member committee was set up last year to look into the implementation of credit system. They will submit a report soon," he said. Senior senate member and head of the committee Nandakumar Nikam said, "One report regarding credit rating system has already been submitted on December 18. Some proposals were accepted while others needed second thoughts. One of the challenges was the implementation of credit system for external students," he said.

The ratio of regular students is more than external students in the university but due to the nominal examination fee and an opportunity to pursue PG along with a profession more students are now applying for external PG courses. "We know that it is not possible to assess regular and external students together. We will review the case studies of other universities too that have this rating in place and then come up with a suitable solution. We will have a meeting of all the stakeholders next month and a decision will be taken," he said. "Whatever happens, there will be no roll back of the credit rating system," he added.
