A debilitating thought like regret can never cross Jwala Gutta's mind. So, she will never entertain misgivings about how different life would've been had she been a singles player, or what unshared glory might have come her way had she employed her lethal left-hand to rule an undivided court. Having chosen doubles in her teens, she has stuck to her guns ever since and though she can groan about everything that shunts out her speciality from the spotlight, she hasn't - yet - moaned woefully, about how she wishes she had chosen singles.
Though arguably a better stroke-player than Saina Nehwal, and as aggressive in intent as India\'s celebrated poster-girl, Gutta's commitment to fitness has always thrown up uncomfortable questions. Also Read: Injured Jwala Gutta desperate for return
So, while marching on zealously on and off the court for the cause of doubles in India, Gutta occasionally sets herself up for ridicule by sniping at Nehwal, her unmasked derision finding its outlet in tweets and bytes to the media. The contempt is mutual and usually translates to indifference, though undercurrents simmer over as they did when Jwala jumped into the latest difference in opinion between Nehwal and Taufik Hidayat.
A story thread acquires a monstrous life of its own, and so it was that Hidayat's views that foreigners - all foreigners, not himself - ranked higher than Indians deserved better paycheques, got distorted in transliteration. Nehwal, who doesn't hide behind PR-trained niceties and prefers blunt talk, when asked to comment, a tad tangentially said that Taufik having retired couldn't expect to earn the same as World No 1 Lee Chong Wei. Gutta waded into this debate, taking affront on behalf of Hidayat. She launched an attack on Nehwal for not respecting his legendary status enough.
