The 15-day winter session of Parliament may be be adjourned sine die by Friday, a week ahead of its scheduled conclusion. The session began on December 5.

Sources said a top government functionary had approached the BJP for clearing essential financial business, including the Supplementary Demands for Grants (General), on Thursday so that the session could be brought to an end thereafter.

However, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath told The Indian Express, "There is no such move. The Business Advisory Committee (BAC) has already allotted time for various pending

legislations."

The two Houses have been dysfunctional since the beginning of the session because of disruptions by members over a variety of issues.

Deputy Leader of the BJP in the Rajya Sabha Ravi Shankar Prasad told The

Indian Express after a meeting at the residence of L K Advani, "There are reports that the session may be

terminated earlier than scheduled."

"The BJP has been always ready to co-operate with the government for a smooth functioning of Parliament. The disruptions are being caused by members belonging to either the ruling coalition or its allies and we have not seen the government make any attempt to check these disruptions," he said.

When asked about the possibility of the party moving a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, Prasad said, "It would become an academic issue if the government decides to cut short the session."

The sources revealed that senior BJP leaders had rejected the suggestion from some party members that the party press a no-trust move against Kumar.

"It would only send a signal that we cannot go after the government and therefore, we have chosen to take on the Speaker," a source said. Moreover, they felt, an attack on Kumar without any provocation would not go down well with weaker sections.
