A 57-year-old Kandivali-based woman, who went for an evening walk for around 30 minutes, returned home to find her flat ransacked and looted. The robbers, who were arrested by Samta Nagar police on Monday, wanted money to celebrate New Year.
Police said Krishna Kariwala stays with her husband Matadin on the fourth floor of the Gokul Monarch uilding in Thakur Village, Kandivali east. Their sons stay in Goregaon west with their families.
Police said the woman's daily routine included an evening walk at 6.30 pm for half an hour. On December 18, when Krishna came home after the walk, she found her cupboard ransacked and jewellery and cash worth Rs 6 lakh stolen. "The house was not broken into," said inspector (crime) LG Shinde.
After the complaint was registered, police had detained the couple's domestic help, watchman and a dhobi in the locality.
The police added the woman told them that her neighbours's son, who is a carpenter and stays in Bhayander, had visited her a day before the robbery and chatted with her for more than 20 minutes.
Shinde said they detained the neighbour's son, Jagdish Sutar (26), who confessed to the crime.
Sutar, who was disowned by his parents, told the police that he had visited Kariwala in the morning on the day and stole the house key. After making a duplicate key, he returned and kept the key back.
He, with the help of a Deepak Eknath (25), planned the robbery. Eknath carried out the crime.
"We have arrested the duo and recovered the jewellery. The men spent some of the cash at local bars and wanted to sell the jewellery to celebrate New Year's eve at a swanky party," said the officer. The two will be presented before the court on Tuesday.
