Youth kills girlfriend, surrenders at police station

A 22-year-old youth, his clothes bloodied, walked into Belapur police station and surrendered Monday after allegedly murdering his 18-year-old girlfriend at her Belapur Sector-3 house.

Ganesh Suryavanshi, a resident of Chembur, allegedly slit the throat of Shaheen Khan, his girlfriend of one year, and locked the house after the murder.

He reportedly told police there was a moment of regret after he attacked her, when he tried to stop the blood flow, but it was too late, said additional commissioner of police Fatehsing Patil.

The couple had been having arguments on the subject of marriage, with the girl trying to evade commitment, officials said.

Suryavanshi handed over the keys of Khan's house to the duty officer who initially could not believe what he heard. A police team was rushed to the victim's house where they found the body in a pool of blood inside the bathroom.

Suryavanshi worked with a local tour company when he met the victim, who was a second-year MBA student at D. Y. Patil College in Nerul, during a college trip last year.

"Suryavanshi had been part of the group that toured with the students last year. They had been in a relationship ever since. However, for the past three months, they constantly quarelled over the subject of marriage. Suryavanshi claims Shaheen had been putting off marrying him," said deputy commissioner of police (Zone I) Purshottam Karad.

On Monday, the couple had another argument over the phone before Suryavanshi went to her home in Belapur's sector 3 in the evening. "He had kept a knife with him. At Shaheen's home, they had another argument after which he slit her throat," Karad said.

According to police, Suryavanshi even pulled Shaheen to the bathroom and tried to wash the wound.

"His clothes were wet and bloodied," Patil said.
