India was born in the throes of Partition where lakhs of people perished in internecine violence. A terrible and momentous event it was, unrivalled in rage and mass killings, but since then the country has been wracked by a number of other such earth-shaking events. Mandal Commission, established in 1979 by PM Morarji Desai's govt to 'identify backward' people. Caste discrimination was sought to be redressed by reservations in govt jobs for OBCs, SCs/STs. PM V P Singh sought to implement it in 1989  causing protest across country, represented by self-immolation by Rajeev Goswami and other students.

Babri Masjid, a 16th-century mosque in Ayodhya, reportedly built at Muslim ruler Babar's behest in the holy city of Ayodhya on the spot of Lord Ram's birthplace (Ram janmabhoomi). On Dec 6, 1992 Hindu kar sevaks (Hindu extremist organisations) destroyed it, thereby breaking vows made to authorities, including PM Narasimha Rao.

Budget broke almost entirely from the Nehruvian 'protectionist' policies of the past to usher in liberalisation into Indian economy, encouraged foreign investments and reduced import duty heavily.

Emergency (26 June, 1975  21 March, 1977) was declared under Article 352 of the Constitution of India by then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed on orders of Congress PM Indira Gandhi. It, in effect suspended democracy and made Gandhi the 'dictator' of India. Civil liberties were suspended.
