Thane building collapse: Rescue operations called off, toll 72
The death toll in the under-construction building collapse in Shil Phata area of Thane has risen to 38 as rescuers recovered more bodies from the site this morning. While 69 people were injured, rescuers fear that some victims are still trapped under debris. (IE Photo: Prashant Nadkar)
Eight members of a family died in the incident, leaving behind only one survivor - a minor child. Other deceased included 12 men, some of whom were construction workers, ten children and eight women. (IE Photo: Deepak Joshi)
The building collapsed at around 6.30 pm, the officials said, adding, the injured were rushed to various hospitals. Deputy Collector Manoj Gohad said several persons could still be trapped under the debris.

At the time of incident, there were around 35 families in the building. Rescue and relief operations continued till late in the night as people are still feared to be buried under the debris.

The injured have admitted to various hospitals including Thane Civil, CSM Civic hospital at Kalwa, Kalsekar hospital in Kalwa, while those in critical condition were shifted to Sion and JJ Hospital. (IE Photo: Deepak Joshi)
