Happy Birthday Rishi Kapoor: From perennial romantic hero to a scheming villain

Bollywood veteran Rishi Kapoor enjoys the reputation of being one of the most versatile actors of the film fraternity. From playing the perennial romantic hero to transforming himself as the go-to character actor, Rishi Kapoor has enjoyed a very high reputation in Bollywood. The tag further grew bold with his exceptional performance as the ruthless Rauf Lala in Agneepath (2011) and then later in Aurangzeb, D-Day (2012) to name a few.

Rishi Kapoor married actress Neetu Singh in 1981. The couple have two children – Ranbir Kapoor and Riddhima Kapoor Sahani. Ranbir Kapoor is a successful actor. Rishi Kapoor made his debut in his father Raj Kapoor's 1970 film Mera Naam Joker. He played his father's role as a child.
Rishi Kapoor did his first lead role opposite Dimple Kapadia in the 1973 teenage love story Bobby. In an interview Rishi Kapoor said: "There was a misconception that the film was made to launch me as an actor. Bobby was actually made to pay the debts of Mera Naam Joker. Dad wanted to make a teenage love story and he did not have money to cast Rajesh Khanna in the film."
Rishi Kapoor did a total of four movies – Bobby, Saagar, Patiala House and Pyaar Mein Twist – with Dimple Kapadia. There were reports that Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia allegedly had an affair but nothing came out of these rumours. Pyaar Mein Twist created a huge stir as the charismatic pair was returning to the silver screen after a gap of two decades. In fact, a few sequences of the film also resonated Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia's Bobby days.
Since then Rishi Kapoor played leading roles as the romantic lead in 92 films - 41 multi-hero films and 51 solo hero films from 1973-2000. Rishi Kapoor and Tabu in Pehla Pehla Pyaar.
He formed a his pair with his wife and then girlfriend Neetu Singh in 12 films – Khel Khel Mein (1975), Rafoo Chakkar (1975), Kabhie Kabhie (1976), Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Duniya Meri Jeb Mein (1979) and their guest appearance in Pati Patni Aur Woh (1978), Zehreela Insaan (1974), Zinda Dil (1975), Doosara Aadmi (1977), Anjane Mein (1978), Jhoota Kahin Ka (1979) and Dhan Daulat (1980).
90s was Rishi Kapoor's romantic hero phase. With films Chandni, Henna (1991) Deewana (1992), Damini – Lightning (1993), Prem Yog (1994), Saajan Ki Baahon Mein, Yaraana (1995), Prem Granth (1996) he etched his image as the penultimate romantic hero. He romanced he leading actresses of 90s like Juhi Chawla, Madhuri Dixit, Sridevi and Divya Bharti.
In 1999 he directed the film Aa Ab Laut Chalen, starring Rajesh Khanna, Aishwarya Rai, Akshaye Khanna, Kader Khan, Paresh Rawal and Jaspal Bhatti.
His last film as a romantic lead was the delayed release Karobaar: The Business of Love (2000) also starring Juhi Chawla and Anil Kapoor.
Rishi kapoor moved on to supporting roles in the 2000s. He has since then played supporting characters in films like Yeh Hai Jalwa (2002), Hum Tum (2004), Fanaa (2006), Namaste London (2007), Love Aaj Kal (2009) and Patiala House (2010), Housefull 2 (2012).
He also appeared in British films Don't Stop Dreaming (2007) and Sambar Salsa (2008).
He also acted in the movie Chintu Ji in which he played himself. The film has references that pertain to Raj Kapoor, his father, his mother, his wife and his earlier films like Chandni, Mera Naam Joker and others.
He reunited with his wife Neetu Singh in the hit movie Do Dooni Chaar in 2010.
In 2013, Rishi Kapoor has seven releases, of which one of the most awaited films is Besharam with his wife Neetu Singh and son Ranbir. Rishi Kapoor in an interview said: "We actors are puppets of the directors! It's the way I am viewed today, though I am the same person and the same actor."
