Year 2013 had a great mix of films - a bit of romance with Kundan and Zoya in ‘Raanjhanaa’, Ranbir Deepika's ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, ‘Aashiqui 2’, ‘Ram-Leela’ plus action thriller with ‘Chennai Express’, ‘Krrish 3’ and the latest ‘Dhoom: 3’. Cinema like ‘The Lunchbox’, ‘Ship Of Thesus’ also wooed us. Bollywood also witnessed high points with 3 films -- ‘Chennai Express’, ‘Krrish 3’ and the latest ‘Dhoom: 3’ – which crossed the elite Rs 200 crore mark. 2013 has indeed raised the bar for 2014, and with this impressive line-up looks like the New Year is up for the challenge. Dedh Ishqiya (January 10): One of the first releases of 2014 is Madhuri Dixit’s comeback film ‘Dedh Ishqiya’ a sequel to 2009 hit film ‘Ishqiya’, which had Vidya Balan in the lead. The film, which is based on deceitful love will have Madhuri Dixit and the others – Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi and Huma Qureshi – in shades of grey. One of the film’s highlight is Madhuri Dixit’s scintillating dance moves, which we have seen in ‘Tumahari Atariya’.
Lakshmi (January 17): The Nagesh Kuknoor film which stars singer-turned-actress Monali Thakur has been low on promotions but presents a hard hitting topic of child trafficking and prostitution. The film also stars actors Shefali Shah and Ram Kapoor. The first trailer of the film shows the world which exists parallel to our ‘safe and sound’ world and the story follows when the wall between the two dissolves.
Jai Ho (January 24): Shah Rukh and Aamir Khan have had their share of Box office success in 2013, and now it's Salman Khan’s turn to make his mark at the Box Office with his action film ‘Jai Ho’. The theme of the film is resonated in today’s political milieu – the awakening of the common man and the consequences for the corrupt. The film also marks the return of actress Tabu as Salman’s sister in the Sohail Khan film.
Gunday (February 14): Set in Bengal, 'Gunday' tells the tale of two friends Bikram (Ranveer Singh) and Bala (Arjun Kapoor), who grow up from being small time coal thieves to becoming the biggest and most powerful coal mafia men. The film is making news for the high end action sequences by the two protagonists and primarily the ‘chemistry’ between them. The film also stars Priyanka Chopra as a cabaret dancer Nandita and the object of desire for both heroes.
Highway (February 21): Starring Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda, Highway is a road thriller directed by Imtiaz Ali. The first trailer of the film shows Student Of The Year actress Alia Bhatt shedding her cute looks, while Randeep Hooda is promising as the uncouth abductor.
Shaadi Ke Side Effects (February 28): This one will be a tangy love story portrayed by Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan. While the film’s sequel ‘Pyaar Ke Side Effects’ shows the perspective of the alpha lovers Trisha and Sid, this film takes off from the point when they get married.
Gulaab Gang (March 7): Yet another Madhuri Dixit film, which will showcase an altogether different aspect of Madhuri Dixit's acting prowess. Madhuri will be seen in an action packed mode in the film based on a real life group of women fighting against the social injustice, operating in Bundelkhand area.
The film also has actress Juhi Chawla, who in the 90s was considered to be one of Madhuri's biggest rivals. Juhi Chawla will be seen in a negative roole for the first time in the Abhishek Choubey film.
Action Jackson (April 11): The Prabhu Dheva comedy action film stars Ajay Devgn, Sonakshi Sinha, Yaami Gautam and Kunaal Roy Kapur in lead roles. Like any other Prabhu Dheva one can expect a lot of high action drama and some of the best dancing sequences. This is the first time that Prabhu Dheva has teamed up with Ajay Devgn and will be working on an original script instead of south remake.
2 States (April18): Based on the Chetan Bhagat novel by the same name ‘2 States’ stars ‘Student Of The Year’ actress Alia Bhatt as a Tamilian-Brahman trendy girl, who falls in love with a Punjabi guy played by ‘Ishaqzaade’ actor Arjun Kapoor. The story follows their romance and separation finally how did they reach their ‘happily ever after’.
Peekay (June 6): Though nothing much has been revealed about the plot or storyline of the Aamir Khan film, yet the film has created a buzz al through 2013 for Aamir Khan’s bizzare outfits and unconventional look. The film directed by Rajkumar Hirani also stars Anushka Sharma and ‘Kai Po Che’ actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
